Introduction
Hello and welcome back to my blog, today I’ll be researching the target audience of my genre along with successful company’s that distribute and produce my genre. Last blog I finished researching conventions of sport dramas and in these next couple blogs I will wrap up the research part of this process and move on to planning.
Demographics/ Target Audience
Demographics and target audience go hand in hand because demographics are a part of target audience. The word demographics means the statistical characteristics of a group of viewers, so what I need to focus on is the age of my audience so I know who my viewers will be.
Sports dramas can range through maturity rating because while one a sports drama rated G wont show vulgar or inappropriate language and therefore be more kid friendly, a film rated R my focus on a more vulgar and adult story that would not be suitable for kids.
The protagonist of my film will be young and our film is ment to be inspirational so we want viewers who are young and interested or already involved in sports, Therefore our target age demographic is about 10-18 so the ideal maturity rating for this film would be rated G for everyone because demographics may vary, preteens may want to watch with their parents or relatives or adults who like sport dramas may want to watch as well.
As for the target audience we are aiming for sports (specifically gymnastics) fans since they are the ones likely to watch our film along with drama lovers or just sport fans.
Production Company’s and Distribution
While researching popular sport drama production company’s I found plenty of great company’s but the main two I want to focus on are A24 and Religion of Sport, religion of sport like the name suggests focuses mainly on sports media while A24 produces majority drama indie media. Both company’s also distribute their media themselves.
A24
A24 has grown in popularity due its deeply emotional coming of age movies like Euphoria and the Florida project. The company itself is an American independent entertainment company based in New York and founded in 2012. Since 2012, the company has gained 56 academy award nominations and has more than 17 wins. The company distributes across very popular streaming sites like Netflix and Hulu and the company is now valued at more than $2.5 billion. One reason for there huge success is there clever, online focused marketing campaign and strong brand identity. They emphasize their brand through producing creative and deep films of similar genres, giving the company a vibe in the film industry.
As for their marketing campaign, A24 advertises their new production mainly online because much of their fan base/ target audience is very online in social media, for example for the past week I’ve been getting multiple ads about their new movie Marty Supreme, the movie is a sports drama that follows a ping pong player as he chases and idealizes the American dream of being a sport star, the main charcter is a narcissist and the film emphasizes this by focusing on Martys mental state as he is put under pressure revealing themes of oppression, ambition, rivalry personal struggle, and the dark side of the American dream.
This film is being distributed in theaters right now, it was theatrically released in multiple country’s as of December of 2025 and is now being distributed online where it can be bought or rented on sites like Prime Video and Apple TV, many films from this company are distributed similarly since this is the company’s usual path in producing and distributing media.
Religion Of Sport
This company is based in Los Angeles and focuses mainly on sports content but this comes in the form of documentary’s, films, and series. The company also focuses on inspirational storytelling that are emotional, personal, and show the athletes psychological side making their media emotional and falling into the sports drama genre. This company is a perfect inspiration for my film opening since I am producing a sport drama coming of age which is why I plan on blending together this company along with A24 for inspiration.
More into the company, the name itself reflects the company because it comes from a shared idea that sports feels like a religion. For many people, sports creates a passion, identity, community, and loyalty, similar to a Religion. To help their media reach people who feel this way about sports, the company advertises online like A24 since they share a similar age demographic but since they focus on sports they distribute their media on sites already popular in sports content like ESPN, Apple TV, Netflix, Fox sports, etc.
A popular media production from this company is Simone Biles Rising, a documentary on Netflix focused on the famous Olympic star Simone Biles as she takes a break from competing at the Olympics to focus on her mental health which is part of her journey from the Tokyo 2020 Olympics to her return at Paris 2024. The documentary was released on Netflix and advertised on Simone Biles accounts, Netflix accounts across social platforms and Religion Of Sports social accounts as well. This documentary is also an inspiration for my film because every gymnast fan is inspired by Simone Biles career, she is one of the most famous, influential, and talented gymnasts in the world. The documentary also focuses on the physiological effects of the sport on her and it is a drama like my upcoming film opening.
Conclusion
This concludes my research on target audience, production company’s, and successful distribution strategies. This research has helped me learn who will watch my film and how and what I think most important takeaways from the company’s and distribution is that A24 focuses on emotional, indie films, while Religion Of Sports highlights real athletes’ journeys like Simone Biles Rising. Having studied their production, distribution, and marketing strategies will help me and my partner guide our own sports drama to inspire and engage viewers once we start our planning and production. Thank you for reading and till next time!
